To complain yes but as a paper they will argue the case than is not the editor or the papers views and opinion and she has compsed a piece for perphas her views against gay marrige whilst they have writers who gave views on yes to gay marrige.A balance they will say.Even though her views are wrong and disappointing.

WUP- It does have an effect when people complain to a newspaper.

A few years ago, in an article published in The Guardian the chavish downmarket tabloid journo, Julie Burchill, made derogatory comments about the 'Irish' that were racist and uncalled for and I was one of many who wrote to complain. I got an apology back from them and she was let go by the Guardian!

if more than ten people complain to the Gardaí claiming incitment to hatred they have to look into it and take action against the person once they have investigated it. If we all complain to the same police station and enough people do it, we can effect a return against this womans hateful disgusting rant today. Same applies to TDs but the number is 6. I suggest we complain to both as well as writing to the Sunday Times to let them know how you feel.

But if they have someone is favour of gay marrige then that is considered balanced.

I did not hear Todayfm so which are you referring to the interview or writing in the paper?

Pity her name isn't "Breda Power" because then she'd sound like a militant heterosexual front.

Hang on here Ozzy and company. The woman's argument is actually self-contradictory on a number of points. To the more erudite reader it actually kills itself. To report people to the police and possibly have them jailed over expressing a half-assed opinion is morally wrong and highly detrimental to democracy. An ill-conceived, contradictory piece of tabloid-fodder such as this can fall on its own merits. The purpose of the incitement to hatred act was to prevent people doing what Ian Paisley was wont to do in times past and actually advocate violence or extreme prejudice against a minority or group. The article is ignorant in the extreme but no way is it even in the realm that category. An NGO, I think, tried to bring Kevin Myers up on it over the infamous Africa article and were laughed out of court. The incitement to hatred legislation could and should be used against the likes of Youth Defense but hauling each and every ultra-conservative hack up before the courts makes a mockery of the situation.

Unusually for me I agree with Dolli - yes the arguments are vile but bloody well argue against them in a rational manner rathen than censor her

I read the Sunday Times article and posted a few comments in the Pride thread (where it was first posted) but I haven’t heard her interview yet.

I think I'll be saddened by her attitude, but I agree with Dolli. While I find her opinion disgusting, I don’t think I'd like to live in a world where having an unpopular opinion is a criminal offence.

Now, if she was standing on street corner, with a flaming torch and a pitchfork, encouraging people to burn Panti Bar, then yes, that's incitement, but as it stands I really don’t think she’s committed an offence.

As an aside, has anyone ever been prosecuted under the incitement to hatred legislation?

See my comment above. Throwing people in prison because they disagree with you is the slipperiest of slopes. I could write a riposte in fifteen minutes flat that would demolish that article to 99% of the people reading it. Surely with a soaring crime rate the police have better things to be doing?
