Yeah don't spend what you don't have.. live within your means.. etc., etc.,.. Seriously though.. Aldi/Lidl all the way and stay in on weekends with dvds, tinnies and snackzies - also a good time to get house work done when you're broke - and when you're doing your laundry you might find money in your pockets that you forgot you had!

I've been on sick pay (same as dole) for a while now so I've had to cut costs. What I do when I go shopping for food in Dunnes is go straight to the reduced-to-clear section. There I find fruit, veg and meat at half price or better. I buy as much as I can afford and only things that I know I will use. I also buy rosemary and thyme when I see it cheap too as they freeze well.

I chop up the fuit and veg and seperate the meat into meal sized portions and freeze it all in bags.

So my freezer is always stocked with good quality frozen food.

Fruit I use for smooties. Veg for stirfries and soups.

Don't use a credit card.
No money = no spending.

Take out a big lump of cash at one time rather than using laser card etc to buy things, this way you can keep a slightly better idea of how much you have spent

That would never work for me.
Having put aside for bills in the bank works for me.
If i had cold cash in my pocket, I doubt the bills would get paid.
I would spend the lot of it on stuff i could manage without.

Frodo,
try this.
Every time you part with money, jut write down on a little notepad when, how much and why.
First, it will stop you buying stuff you do not need.
Second, it will help you find where the money goes.

Then input that with your earnings, your bills, etc, in a spreadsheet and find out where you go wrong.
Also find out the effect of modifying some spendings/earnings.

Also make sure you claim all your tax cedits!

I made substantial savings from switching from bill phone to ready to go, you find you don't gab on the mobile when you know the talk time is limited.

Yeah look into your utility bills (TV, phone, elec, etc), see if you can get them down through new packages or turning off lights, etc.

Also bring a packed lunch to work if you don't already.

I go home for lunch everyday since I live 5 minutes away, it does save loads of money in the long run.

It may be worth going over my bills and may sitch providers.

To be honest I just really like to know where all teh money went! I did buy a plane ticket this month and paid some money into my credit card, but still! My wages just seem to have evaporated!

Yeah ESB and Eircom are rip off bandits. Also if you have a BIG credit card bill that you can't pay off, you could get a low interest loan and pay it off that way. Credit cards are a demon if you don't pay them off in full every month.
