For the second year running Tallaght Library is hosting a series of events for LGBT History Month, and this year their schedule is bigger and better than ever!

11th February 2010: Literary Evening (7-9pm at Tallaght Library)
Join Jamie O’Neill (author of the best-selling At Swim, Two Boys), Denis Kehoe (author of Nights Beneath the Nation) and Jarlath Gregory (author of G.A.A.Y., Snapshots) for what promises to be a lively discussion of the topic of writing gay fiction. The evening will also feature readings from the author’s books.

18th February 2010: Irish Gay History (7-9pm at Tallaght Library)
As LGBT History Month shows us, there’s more to gay history than just the last few years. Join Brian Lacey, author of Terrible Queer Creatures: A History of Homosexuality in Ireland and very special guest, Senator David Norris, as they discuss times gone by and how they’ve brought us to where we are now.

25th February 2010: Movie Night @ Tallaght Library (7-9pm)
Especially for LGBT History Month, the monthly Movie Night is screening the award-winning Milk, directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Sean Penn, as they legendary Gay Rights Activist, Harvey Milk. Like all other events at the County Library, the event is free.

This year, we have a wide range of events that we hope will be of interest to all of our borrowers. Booking is essential for all events as places are limited. To book, please contact the County Library on: 01 4620073.

Very pointedly male oriented, hardly LGBT. Even when you go through the library events site, there is no indication that LBT exist in the programme.

Edit, before I get jumped on: The Irish Queer Archive Exhibition is open there the whole month, but no programmed L, B or T events, only G.

Hi there,

Apologies if you've had trouble booking for any of the events. The Literary Evening and the Irish Gay History talk require booking. As far as I'm aware, all of the staff know about these events and will be more than happy to take a booking. I would encourage you to please try again if you would like to attend any of these events.

The screening of the film Milk is open to all and doesn't require booking.

@Troll. The listing was late going up on the website. The page for the event is here: http://www.southdublinlibraries.ie/news/2010/01/lgbt-history-mont etc ...

I can't believe I forgot to post the poster:

Also, new to the line-up:

3rd to 27th February: A Liberating Party exhibition (during opening hours)

A Liberating Party charts the emergence of LGBT Pride on the island of Ireland from the early 1970s up to 1993, when sex between men was finally decriminalised. Writer and historian Tonie Walsh curates an evocative exhibition of materials - newsclippings, photographs, posters, flyers and other ephemera - drawn mainly from the collections of the Irish Queer Archive at the National Library. This is a rare opportunity to witness the political and socio-cultural evolution of one of Ireland's hitherto marginalised minorities.

Excellent! It looks like a great schedule, despite missing all the other aspects of the community (!) I will go along to some of the events. However, a pertinent point made by Troll:

Very pointedly male oriented, hardly LGBT. Even when you go through the library events site, there is no indication that LBT exist in the programme.

To do as it says on the site and celebrate LGBT History Month during February @ County Library Tallaght it needs to be inclusive. There are many LBTQ activists who would, I'm sure, be willing to take part in the events and give a talk/seminar or something in the library.

Even the poster has what looks to be male-only images.

Hmm, isn’t the word ‘lesbian’ in LGTB?? Is there a lesbian or a woman mentioned in these series of talks, or the movie shown, or on the poster . . . oh yeah, its LGBT HIStory – not HERstory.

Seriously, I thought we were past this, its pretty basic stuff. How can the organisers of this event overlook this?

'sailorboy' - are you involved in the planning of this event? - can you please explain?! Did it even occur to you?

While the organisers of this event are to be commended on putting it together some very valid points have been raised, where are the representations from the Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender communities?

I would like to ask the organisers how it came about when putting it together that it ended up virtually completely male orientated? Was it lack of information? Lack of access to L, B or T people willing to speak or was it lack of foresight or initiative or interest in looking for input or representation from anything other than the gay male community?

Again I would stress that it is a commendable and interesting looking event but also very exclusive.
