Do we have Any, Enough or should there be more? Is there any running in the forthcoming elections?

Senator Dominic Hannigan (lab) in Meath East and Cllr John Lyons (lab) in Dublin North West, Roderic O Gorman (grn) are the only openly gay candidates that I'm aware of - I think there might be more - there are a good few councillors

There is a depressing lack of out gay TDs. In fact there are none at the moment.

That should start to change with the next election. Ireland is lagging behind in this regard.

I remember the front page of the Evening Hearld around 1996 with Brendan Howlin striking a macho pose against a bar with a pint and the headline "I'm NOT Gay". Truly life-affirming stuff for the then 15-year old dollimixture.

Give it another ten years from the current and next generation to start making their mark. I'd say we will see more over time.

Yup, I remember that. Pathetic. But decriminalisation was barely 3 years passed at that point and the divorce referendum had only just scraped through. Ireland has come a long way in the intervening 15 years.

A simple, reserved and dignified statement would have been just as effective.
