Theresa May To Seek Snap Election

# 1 : Tuesday 18-4-2017 @ 15:08

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has announced plans to call a snap general election on 8 June. She said Britain needed certainty, stability and strong leadership following the EU referendum.

Explaining the decision, Mrs May said: "The country is coming together but Westminster is not."

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said his Labour Party wanted the election, calling it a chance to get a government that puts "the majority first".

There will be a vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday to approve the election plan - the prime minister needs two thirds of MPs to vote in favour to hold a vote before the next scheduled election date of 2020.

Explaining her change of heart on an early election, Mrs May said: "I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election."

Will be fascinating to see how this plays out. Will Labour be decimated? Will the Lib Dems (firmly Pro EU) grab loads of seats and spoil the Brexit party?

Last chance to revert the Brexit decision via another popular vote.
Risk: UKIP taking over conservative in unexpected last-breath twist.

Labour's position (or more accurately Corbyn's) on Brexit is a farce. Hopefully a new Labour leader together with the SNP and a rejuvenated Lib Dems can deliver a softer Brexit for the UK.

May is not going to participate in the the TV debate which is fairly chicken, and arrogant of her.
Tim Farron might not be there either if its scheduled for after his bedtime.

No doubt she believes the less we see of her the better her party will do. She'll probably slip up somewhere on the campaign trail though - we'll have to rely on the Guardian / BBC for coverage of that - all the other media outlets are slavishly devoted for some reason.

The other factor is that by debating with other leaders, she gives the nonentity of a LibDem leader a profile that he would not get otherwise, and his party is the biggest threat to Tory seats.

True though hopefully they will still have debates without her.

Unbeleivable he hasn't been able to get a proper Brexit bump in the polls given how Labour are! Makes sense to keep him neutered.

They are questioning whether or not the media should "empty seat" her (in debates she does not go to or does not send someone to) in order to highlight the fact that she is refusing to debate.
