Ireland's Abortion Referendum 2018

# 1 : Tuesday 26-9-2017 @ 19:45

A referendum on abortion rights in Ireland will likely be held next summer, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said.

The vote on the Eighth Amendment to the Republic's Constitution - which states that the right to life of the mother and the unborn child are equal - is due in May or June.

The amendment has long been the source of contention in Ireland, with pro-choice supporters demanding its abolition and pro-life advocates insisting it should be retained.

If you thought the lead up to the marriage equality referendum was messy, this is going to be an absolute headfuck. There's already posters up. I wouldn't be surprised if someone got murdered.

About time! This really needs to be addressed once and for all.

I hope it doesn't get too ugly.

I am sorry but the quality referendum was not messy
All the major parties supported it
Media while having to be balanced was all on side
Most posters was for it and the opposition was near non existent

I don't know what planet you were on before the referendum or what hole you had your head buried in but it most certainly was messy. The vitriol, untruths and hate I witnessed in newspapers, on the radio and social media was absolutely shocking at times.

What? The shite coming out of Iona/Meith Kills/Maddy Panning, The vitriol, The nasty hateful posters? Your opinions dont make sense given the evidence says the opposite.

This is going to get very ugly if the opposition to marriage equality is anything to go by. They will see this as the last stand. The lunatics will be out in force. I certainly won't be watching any debates on the matter in the lead up to it.

I'm always of the opinion the No vote campaign ruin it for themselves. They definitely turned off a lot of No voters or those undecided in the Eauality Marriage referendum with their awful lies and their awful campaign.

Hopefully the No campaign will again be just as vile and make the minds of those undecided up.

We don't know what the question is yet. I suspect if its too wishy washy it could split the pro choice side.

I saw a video of David Quinn, head of Iona talking to a a few hundred people leading up to the marriage referendum that the marriage referendum was not their main goal. It was a practice run for an impending abortion referendum. He said if they won the marriage referendum, they won the abortion referendum.

The gloves will be well and truly off in the run up to this referendum. It will be brutal. Expect huge street protests the like we've not seen in a long time.

I predict the result will be extremely close. The world will be watching.
