What happened in 2009??

For Irish I am preparing essays on a few topical pieces, such as the recession, poverty, crime/drink/drugs, teenage problems etc etc etc. Just learning important points for each one, so I can write about them if they come up. But can anyone think of anything else major-ish that happened last year, especially October/November/December? For example, an essay that came up in the 2009 paper was "President Obama" -

Buddypress in Wordpress

I have been building a website for a friend, using my usual platform of Wordpress: it can be used without any knowledge of web mastering.

He wanted a forum... so I used the Buddypress plugin.
It was a nightmare but I finally managed to put the forum up, stop people from creating threads in some categories, but not stop them from replying to existing threads in them.

The site goes live at the end of the month so I

French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has installed a walk-through aviary at the Barbican, inhabited by 40 zebra finches and with a landscape of electric guitars. Music from the back of one of Britain's leading concert halls may sound a touch random for the next three months, discordant even. But then the musicians are

Random short story

I haven't done on of these in awhile! I was typing it up for school so thought I may as well post it here too. :p This was inspired by a story I read in the newspaper about a dog being beaten to death.

I paced up and down the waiting room, my eyes glued to the blurred floor. I felt numb. I couldn't think. So many thoughts were racing through my mind. I struggled to hold back the tears.

A Flash Lock is effectively a weir with a single gate to allow boats to navigate beyond the structure. Originally very simple structures allowing boards to be dropped into place across the water to build up depth later versions used movable gates.
The extraordinary theory of Julian Jaynes.

More significantly, there's no evidence that I'm aware of that the other Israelites thought there was anything unusual about this. Hearing voices in your head seemed to be pretty common in Old Testament Israel.
