What Is Pretentiousness?

# 1 : Tuesday 4-8-2009 @ 09:36

This thread is to explore pretentiousness in all its forms.
What would you consider pretentious?
Are you pretentious about some things?
Are you devoid of pretentiousness? How do you know you are?
Is it completely avoidable?
If you are only pretentious about ONE thing, what is it?
I personally can't stand snobs, pretentious people or pretentious actions. There is no need for that kind of carry on.

That's interesting. Never thought of it that way. Can you clarify? Thanks.

Thanks for that, Kimcrush. So, if pretentiousness is unavoidable, where do you draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable pretentiousness?

you don't, unless you want to stop and think about everything you say and do.
Then that brings us on to a whole new question. How anal are you ?

Then it's a fine balance between being anal and being pretentious.

Even though I think I can be a nice person there is a total pretentious snob just bursting to come out from deep down inside me. I think I just keep him back to 'fit in'

Hmmmm. I think it is wrong to be pretentious (and I believe there is no balance, because it is often used to make one person feel above/better than another). People who are, are essentially liars/fake to some degree. I think if you want to have certain attributes/social standing etc, then you should work for it, acquire it, and be it... then pretentiousness turns to reality. The difference between one being pretentious and one keeping it real is arrogance.... (which in my opinion is based on a deep inner discontentment)

People who are real authentic dont need to be pretentious, in fact they will be the exact opposite. They will remain open even through hostility. They will be humble and will always know that they are a very small part of a very great masterpiece. (imo)

because we develope areas of specialization our knowledge in those areas seperates us from other folk, pretentiousness occurs when someone is trying to explain complex, often contradictory ideas to lay folk.explaining quantum mechanics to a three year old would be stupid like darwin explaining evolution to a chimp! i have no problem with pretentiousness rather pomposity
im guilty of both!

I disagree with you. I dont think pretentiousness is based on something one already knows, in fact, I think the contrary is true.

Sometimes I pretend I understand what people told me but I did not even hear it so I have to make it back up in my mind.

your right just looked it up, a claim to have or be something:a pub with no pretensions to be a restaurant.

The core issue of pretentiousness is to pretend, as far as I see. So both Skyline and Futgay hit the nail on the head.

I may pretend about X, and try to be seen doing the 'right' thing, in order to 'fit in'. Is this what pretentiousness is about, at the end of the day?
