I find my use of the written word cringe worthy to embarrassing. My basic grammar and punctuation from the use of full stops, commas, question marks and these things!!! Infantile. My spelling abhor able. My structure of my sentences and paragraph have no structure. Then there is the business of where, were, there, their, though, true, threw I havn’t or hav’nt or havnt’ have not got a clue. I don’t or don’t want to think of these or those things the : ; “ “ [ { ( ~ -full stop.

Yet I am a puritan and I hypocritically believe that everyone can talk and express themselves as they wish but we must all learn to write using the same grammar, punctuation and structural rules. Yet I would be regarded as well read I perpetually have a book or a paper in my hand, still I can't express my thought properly. Then there are others here that the written word seems so effortless expressive and natural, the bastards.

Your thoughts please in proper English

The only punctuation I allow in my posts is the initial letter and the word I, Anything else destroys the stream of consciousness flow of a thread and hampers creativity

If it really bothers you, type your posts in MS-Word first. Right click wherever you see a word underlined in red or green and do what Bill Gates tells you to do. You'll pick up pretty quickly where you're most likely to make mistakes.

It would help a lot if English were more phonetic. There is no reason why "through" and "threw" should be spelt differently. Same goes for "their" and "there". "They're" bugs me. It confuses people. I'd like to see it turfed out of the written language.

I like those peculiarities in English. All people have to do is learn them. Don't get how it could even be confusing.

When I was at school I was good at spelling. When reading these threads I am often surprised at how often words are misused. Obviously when people are banging away at a keyboard it is easy to make typographical errors but I see so many cases where posters use one word when clearly they mean another. Examples of words that people often confuse are - there, their and they're, or your and you're. A word that is constantly misspelt on dating websites is "discreet". My little joke is that "discreet" and "discrete" have discrete meanings (look it up if you don't get it). Maybe it's an understandable error when the noun of discreet is discretion. BTW there's another little grammatical point in the last sentence. An apostrophe is used to indicate possession or ownership, e.g. Paul's car. But "it's" is an abbreviation of "it is" while "its" indicates possession, e.g. have you heard the alarm and noted its sound.
Here endeth the lesson.

I just had a 'quick' look and found some other grammar threads, what makes this one here any different?

Get yourself this book.
Upper Intermediate level.
Do one page of exercises every few days.
It'll take you maybe a year to get through it but you'll have great grammar afterwards.
Its in Easons, downstairs, to the left of the stairs, behind the paypoint.
About 30 yo-yo.

This one is aimed more on a personal level
whereas the others are aimed at the posters who try their best
but it is not to the satisfaction of the thread creators
