# 1 : Thursday 6-8-2009 @ 19:08

hi everyone,
can we discuss dublin taxi's? I apoligise for this, but the other day i got into a taxi in dorset street and asked him to take me to miltown. He then drove on and turned up Blessington st which is one way and guess which way we were going, yes, the wrong way! wellthen as you might agree askedihim to pull in so i could get out and he had the nerve to tell me it was 5.60 on meter. why should i have paid him?

Hmmmmmmm. Sounds interesting......... how about giving us a wee preview?....

Serious question though.. If they are taking you the long way around, do you have the right to refuse payment after asking to be let out. I wouldnt have given that taxi guy 5.60.

According to the taxi guide, the driver has to go the route the passenger wishes to go.

Oi! Less of that please.

€5.60 seems very cheap to get from Dorset Street to Milltown.

I don't think he meant that. I think he meant 5.60 from dorset st to where he asked the driver to get off, at Blessington street. That would sound about right, knowing Dublin taxi prices.
Dublin taxi prices are pretty steep, compared to fares in other places.

In some places, the taxi fares are set according to location, and not metered. For example, 5 euro within Monaghan Town, and 12 euro to outlying villages.

Meters work to the favour of the taxi driver. Think about it. These machines make no account of traffic conditions, apart from having different rates for

The first few km,
Then per km after that, in increasing fare levels

There is also a set rate for waiting time/stuck in traffic

But they all add up.

I'd prefer a flat rate to a metered fare.

What do you think?

Oh, sorry Intrepid, I see what you mean.

If you chose to stop a journey half way through you still have to pay by the meter. Did you make it clear to him why you were ending the journey earlier than you had agreed?

Did you report his driving to the guards?

I see Garr70 has logged out of his account after insulting us tonight. Oh well. When he logs in again, he'll reply to your points, Cheezypuf, hopefully.
