The Right Lane Is For Overtaking!

# 1 : Friday 7-8-2009 @ 11:06

What is it about the driving culture in Ireland that makes people think that it is acceptable to drive in the right lane on a dual carriageway? This is something I find incredibly frustrating.

This picture that I took yesterday morning illustrates my point.

The blue, 1-series BMW on the right is doing about 90kph, as is the red Ford Transit in front of that, as are pretty much all of the other cars in front of them. The BMW and the Transit are not overtaking anything so why are they sitting out there in the overtaking lane? I do a fair bit of driving and I see this happen day after day on Irish roads. I have very seldom seen this happen whilst driving in the UK. The Brits seem to appreciate that the right lane is for overtaking. Similarly I lived in the US for a number of years and found that people didn't hog the overtaking lane like they do here.

Is there some lack of education on this when people are being taught to drive? I think a TV campaign or something is in order.

lol - I can't stand it either. (I don't even drive..!)

They also know what the right-hand lane is for in the rest of Europe - even in Portugal, where they otherwise drive like complete maniacs..

It's a uniquely Irish thing. Stoopid, stoopid..

Do you mind me asking, are you on a provisional or full driver's licence?

I was driving last week and couldn't figure out why someone was flashing their lights at me. Turns out I didn't notice the slow lane that had just begun beside me.

I think a lot of it is ignorance, but all a 'following the herd' trend. People see others do it, so figure they can as well. And I'm assuming this doesn't get policed, so they feel no risk in doing it even though it is wrong.

There is a huge lack of education when it comes to driving. All you need to know is the rules of the road book (which you can then quickly forget) and you have a licence. And even though you are meant to take driving lessons, I am sure that plenty of people don't. Even with all my driving lessons, I still feel I have a lot to learn.

Ah no, it's all good - I was just wondering if it had been a full licence would that (the requirements to get the full licence, I mean) explain why everyone uses the right-hand lane!

Well if i thought the rest of my fellow drivers were picking their favourite lanes, i would probably find them more endearing. As it stands i know they are NOT picking their fave lane, they are just trying to drive me slowly crazy!

Och aye, Birdy, that's right. There are clubs throughout the country, mostly in Cork, called "Stalk and Annoy Birdy When She's Driving Club."

I drive on the right hand lane. Now I do it at speed, and if there is something behind me that is driving up my hole I will pull into the left or if there is no car in the left hand lane that will slow me down I will drive in the left. But other than that it is mainly right

It's a pet peeve of mine too. It's so annoying to try driving on a motorway or dual carriageway and see someone hogging the fast lane. There definitely needs to be a publicity campaign to teach people how to drive on a motorway/ dual carraigeway properly.

Sorry, but you are not using the road correctly. You are supposed to stay left and only use the right lane for overtaking purposes.

And don't get me started about motorways with 3 lanes either side - Irish drivers haven't a clue how to use those.
