Do You Really Want To Marry?

# 1 : Sunday 9-8-2009 @ 16:50

Love is a human right and marriage should be a right for all people regardless of sexuality.

But I was just thinking with the march for marriage on today it would be interesting to know how many people in a steady long term relationship would plan to marry soon if gay marriage was introduced? or if marriage even interests you ?

I am not trying to be negative but just to see what peoples views are? would marriage be for you??? would it push open the doors for you to run down the aisle

Yeah the option to be able to marry would be nice but if we get it i wont be one of the mentalists rushing to the registry office just to prove a point.

I dont ever want to get married in the Irish sense of it. If i was to marry, it should be an intimate thing. Making a promise to someone you love seems somehow demeaned by having some sort of a circus to which every relative you have successfully avoided for the last 10 years is invited to.

I don't see myself wanting to marry anytime soon. I'm in a long term relationship but neither of us have a desire to marry. That may change in the future, and if it does, I damn well want to be able to.

I know there are many gay couples who are together many years do want to marry tomorrow. It's a disgrace that we are denied that right.

And if you need to divorce when those rights are implemented (and rightly so),...oi oi oi Five years waiting, then if there are kids involved, property, dodgy lawyers and an ex who is after your blood...then be prepared!!
I'm not denying these rights, but the truth about what can happen when happily ever after goes arse ways can be even more damaging, then, your legally bound.Been there done that..

Well said, BeFemme. Thanks for sharing.

If you want the right to marry you have to want the right to divorce.

I am not sure about getting married but if I ever have a long term partner I want to know that if we ever have children together and I get sick and cant make decisions for myself I would like to know that my partner can make those decisions for me as she is the person I am sharing my life with and who will be raising our children with me.

That's not the issue. The issue is to have the right to make decisions about your life, and to change your mind later on, if it all goes pear shaped.

Change your mind?? Im saddened by the perceived cynicism. I dont know, i think people jump too quickly into marriage and divorce is there for those impulsive fools

It's not that easy, as you know, Birdy. People may co-habit with their partners for many years in bliss, and when they decide to marry, it goes pear-shaped. Why is that?

Aye, i can be cynical, but life taught me that way.

I'd like to have the option to marry someone further down the line if I wanted. Have to find someone first though.

That is the issue. The option. the government should not be telling this group of people, you can marry, and that group, no you may not.

It just makes me sad i guess. How weak have we become that we want all these fail-safes. No wonder there are so many people out there afraid to commit to each other when as a society we show that we dont even trust the strength of our own word or promise. How is anyone ever to trust anyone? We need to stop making things so disposable.

It just saddens me that divorce is now so easily mentioned in the same breath as marriage. They seem to go hand in hand. Ugh hand in hand, now thats been ruined for me too
