Am I The Only One Here Who Hates The Word 'Lesbian'?

Don't get me wrong.

It's not the person, but the WORD itself I can't abide.

The words 'gay woman', or 'dyke', or even 'likes women' fine. No problem.

"Lesbian"... that word grates on me.

Am I the only one here who hates that word?

Lesbian doesn't bother me but dyke, queer, fag, puff, etc are horrible words.

IMO, labels are off putting as they come with connotations.

It's better off to use adjectives and not labels.

Hence, IMO =, the best compromise is 'gay woman'.

I suppose on another level we just have negative associations with them. They can be offensive when used derogatorily. Like prick/cunt/fuck. Prick sounds like brick, but i suppose if brick was a "bad" word it would "sound" the same as prick?!
But its mainly the sounds of the words, the way they roll off the tongue. Gay is fine..

Dyke carries with it much more than just 'gay woman'.
It's about challenging people and society's preconceptions. People find 'dykes' worrying.

This may be an age thing though. Younger people sometimes forget what it was like for others.

I don't mind the word lesbian, I think where most gay women have a problem with it is that it was used in such a way as to make it sound like a bad thing. At best clinical at worst a derogatory

Coco, if you do not like the word lesbian, here's a little suggestion, why not change your status to gay female as opposed to lesbian female? I'm talking about the words under your avatar.
