Netbook Or Laptop?

# 1 : Sunday 14-3-2010 @ 21:39

So my laptop is on the fritz and i need to buy a new one. But i really am not educated enough on these things. Basically i like the ultra portability of netbooks... their size and weight is a plus for me (i know other people hate that but it suits me).

I just need something for college and im starting to think a netbook would be better as long as i have some external storage also... I will really be solely using it for college and occasionally surfing the net. Im not someone who downloads a lot of music or videos. So what is my best option? A laptop or a netbook?

I just need someone to give me some guidance. My budget is €400... €450 max.

Thanks

The lightness of the netbook compared to the laptop is what made me get rid of the laptop.
I have a budget Samsung netbook - it was less than 300. I got it in Power City. I find it great.

Yeah i think i would probably prefer a netbook, i dont want the extra weight of a laptop zipping around the city on a bike. Im still just a bit wary of them. But im pretty sure iim not a very demanding computer user so they would probably fit my needs

I had a search through previous threads, nothing there that really compares the two.

Netbooks can be ideal for college. Just don't go too low-end. Go to Currys / PC world, get the model numbers and then research them online before you buy, or buy online even.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing, not to go too low end. But i go for something a little more expensive then i will end up going way over my budget, as i will have to buy a lot of external stuff. So that makes me think the laptop would make more financial sense.

Thanks all for the advice. If anyone sees a good advert or decent laptop/netbook... please feel free to post a link here. I think i will wait a few weeks and not jump on the first thing i see... which is very hard for me, what with my love for all things electronic lmao.

Thanks again

You're just not even in the loop over in UCD if you aren't sporting the latest in the Netbook range.
Anyone who's anyone has a Netbook.

I'm not anyone. (sony vaio)

@ Perry, laptops will always trump a netbook - unless the laptop is 10 years old

A high-end netbook should cost no more than €400-450

The disadvantage with netbooks is of course the small screen - this can be irritating having to use the scroll bars a lot and can strain your eyes

personally if it was me - I would prefer to buy a really lightweight laptop - however netbooks are so cheap nowadays

I have a Samsung NC10. Focus magazine had an article comparing some netbooks last Summer and the NC10 came out on top. I find it to be pretty good. You should manage to get one in the range of €300 - €330. I got mine in Argos.

Drawbacks are -

Small screen - if you use complicated applications then they look a bit fiddly on the small screen.

No dvd/cd player.

Battery says it will last for 6 hours. Mine lasts 1.5. I must bring it back and get it exchanged for a good battery.

Great info, thanks Column. I think Argos might be worth a look, they have always been very good whenever i have had to return anything.

@perry... i love the Vaio! Hold yer head high man!

Re the small screen, thats something i really have no experience with... and it could end up being a major headache. None of my friends have netbooks, so i have no idea how annoying that could possibly be. Jesus if i could find a lightweight laptop, that might just be the trick.

I know a couple of ppl with Acer netbooks and they're pretty happy with them.
I'm planning on getting one also, when (If) I can get the cash together.

I guess it would take a bit to adjust to a smaller screen, but I'm sure that'll be fine just as long as you're not planning to watch movies on it.

I have my eye on this one:

The screen on a Samsung NC10 is big enough to view a full width A4 word document.

A Sony Vaio is cool though. I'm amazed that a Netbook is considered the thing to have in UCD!
