Know Your Doctor

I went out with a GP a few times during the summer, he only qualified 8 years ago but he said he hadn't done any training since then. But he said there was no need because if someone was seriously ill they would be out of his hands very quickly.

I've had the same doctor now since the early 90's. He's a good sort and never rushes you out the door.

I suppose its not easy, with your walking frame!

I recently had a full blood count done and everything was fine... even though i was feeling really unwell.

Now im literally coming out in huge bruises every other day. Like they are massive, angry bruises. I just noticed a new one this morning on my middle finger and its swollen and painful. Hurts to make a fist now (stop sniggering at the back!)

Anyway, what is a full blood count... is there a specific blood test i should be asking for?

Sounds like a lack of iron, do you eat enough meat?

Yeah loads... though i assume that would have shown up on a blood test?

Yes, it would.

In any case those are not signs of lack of iron. Do you feel tired, unusually pale, are your gums or inner eye lids paler than usual? Those are signs of anaemia which you probably don't have.

Have you considered those bruises have another explanation? Could you somehow be injuring yourself in your sleep?

I suppose its possible im injuring myself in my sleep but given the size of the bruises, i would have thought id have woken up if that was the case. Ive felt generally run down, like mono or something. Maybe its just the stress of college

It could be psychosomatic I guess. You should definitely see a doctor though.

Multiple unexplained non-traumatic large contusions on your hand, accompanied by pain and swelling?

Get yourself to a doctor tomorrow, Swooshy.

You shouldnt have to ask for a blood test- your doctor should know, there are loads.

A FBC measures the shape, size and no. of the 3 main blood cells.

I thought i should update this. I went to the doc (a different doc from the first time) just before Christmas and said i was still a bit concerned about the bruising. I tried to impress upon her that it was not normal at all for me. She said that they she was not worried about it cos the previous full blood count was fine. She thinks it might be hynogogic (sp?) jerks that im having at night time? I was a little irritated because she didnt even look at the bruises.

So i guess thats the end of it? Really not happy though, i couldnt wear and dresses or skirts at Christmas cos the bruises arent small or insignificant. They are fucking massive. Is there a supplement i could take, something missing from my diet??

I would ask them to do it again especially as you mentioned losing weight in another thread, wouldn't your partner notice if you are jerking around so much that you have hurt yourself?

Yeah i mentioned both the weight thing and the fact that i have a partner who would have noticed (Especially if i was giving her a kick ) I felt a bit fobbed off... i was waiting for an hour past my appointment time and i felt like i was just being rushed through.

Up until last year i had the same doctor since i was 10! Actually i think i might make a trip home and see him.
