OK, so does anyone else get frustrated by threads getting hijacked by posts that aren't necessarily off the point (or any of the official Gaire NO NOs) but distract from the issues?

Like lighthearted nonsense - which is grand (but has it's place), but makes developing the debate less likely as others have to trawl through loads of personal opinions or little quips-for-the-sake-of-it when all you ant to do is raise a real debate?

How about a thread category that doesn't allow such superficial nonsense.

Before there are accusations about restricting freedom of speech etc, I only want to encourage a real environment for discussing the issues, not the whimsical tangents of sexual/jokey innuendo or semantic deviations.

What do you all think?

i agree with you. i think when its serious let it be serious, when its an obvious piss take - rip the piss.

but sometimes i find myself a culprit here maybe so i can't be 100% behind this.
i do get what you are saying though

Cheers ice, that's exactly what I mean, I struggle with being concise.

So any more thoughts??

You don't want a site that's too strict - it wouldn't be as fun.

But it all depends on the thread. Joking / chatting etc in a serious topic (for example Intrepid's recent thread) shouldn't be allowed in the slightest.

Its very much a 'price of freedom is (moderator) viglance' situation.

yeah I know they are. I didn't say they weren't. I said people shouldn't be chatty in a serious thread, an example of a serious thread being Intrepid's recent one.

Some Mods take it way too seriously in fairness.

On the whole, Gaire is moderated fairly, in my opinion. We're allowed to chat and have our fun, and in the morning, the thread gets cleaned up,

Ice I'm not saying anybody was chatty in the thread.

I was giving an example of a serious thread, I didn't say anyone was chatty in it. There was no one being chatty in it. Sheesh.

Gaire is very well-moderated - the mods aren't pushovers, nor are they Nazis.
