Tell New House Mates OR Not?

# 1 : Tuesday 30-9-2003 @ 12:50

Hi all

I've just moved into a new house (woohoo!!) but just want some opinions as to whether I should casually make a reference to my sexuality or just not tell them? I'm sharing with 4 straight women late 20's to early 30's. I'm 23. They seem a liitle "wooden" for want of a better description!

I've been out for over 5 years and everyone who knows me knows that I'm gay including people at work.

Any advice?

hey Box,

i think u should tell them, I mean the most important people know that u are gay (i.e your friends, people u work with, etc.) i also find that girls are always alot more accepting as I found 2 out. Told all my males frinds (not all at the same time!) most of them didnt want 2 know me! All my girly friends are closer 2 me b 4 I told them. i think u shud tell them! Sorry if it doesnt help. let us know how u get on.

Yeah you should mention it if it crops up. No need to call a meeting or anything

Dirk is right - women are generally more accepting about these things.

Yes don't wait until some stranger comes wandering out of your bedroom in the morning in his boxers with scratch marks down his back and sits down at the breakfast table with them going 'Howye girls - that Boxy is an animal in the sack, ya know' . . .

at some stage over the next week or so they will probably ask you where you went out pub/club wise and I would just let it come up there or else in some other every day conversation

having a big sit down meeting about it makes it into a big deal.

Hey thanks for the advice. Just don't want it to be an issue in the house but last eve when I was I the TV room and C Street was on they all went "ugh....about Todd & Nick". Took long enough to get a house but don't want to and won't hide in my room with my bf!! (even though that could be fun!!!) lol

well I was in this situation a few months back .....had been living with the girls in the house for a while and it was a nice summer day and we all were in the garden chatting and getting some sun...

anyway they started talking about bf's and one of them asked me if I was seeing someone...at the time I kind of was so I said "Yeah" and they asked her name - and at first I was very cagey and after a while I just said the first inital and they had to guess ....

so they guessed all the names of females u can think of and then one of them guessed a male name - and it was right..

anyway I eventually said yes to the name and of course that gave the game away

They took it much better than I thought - girls usually do I believe..they were surprised but not shocked ...and one of them became very interested in my dates after that!

so I'd say go for it!

i think just casually mentioning it is the best way too, thats how i told my class when i started my masters, made the decision not to hide my sexuality after i had only really come out in fourth year of my undergrad course and felt like i had been hiding it for so long that i hadnt really been myself. I actually got on with everyone so much better in the final few months of that course because i was being myself, and that class was 25 people with only 6 girls! so when i started my masters i didnt bring it up or volunteer the information but if somebody asked was i seeing somebody i just told them bout my boyfriend. regarding what they said bout todd and nick, most of my close female friends get a bit like that when they see guys that they fancy kissing another guy, i think its more jealousy than anything else!
best of luck with it
sorry i think i rambled a bit there!

Hmmmm... funnily enough, alot of straight women are more excepting of guys being gay then of girls being gay. Because if you were a girl, there's always the chance that you might come onto them . I'd say tell them, at the end of the day it's not really going to effect them. It's not like they might get any unrequited attention or anything.
