I recommend the brand new Prime Suspect 1973
. It is a police drama set back in 1973, when Prime Suspect character Jane Tennison is starting out on her career as a lowly WPC. The institutional sexism in the police force is palpable but it's not as hyper 70s cop show as the excellent Life on Mars, also set in '73.
The police force are depicted as more restrained in Prime Suspect 1973 than LOM, but the actress who plays a young Tennison is very good. Young and eager, she has much to learn but shows great promise at a time when there were no women above the rank of sergeant and when women police officers were expected to type, do radio comms, telex and make the tea for the men!
Well worth watching, if not for the murder case for the early 70s period detail and cool music (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Carpenters, the Wailers etc.)
