Young Gay Men, Ignorance Is Aids?

Self glorifying fear mongering trash.

Gawd, this does very little to highlight the problem in an approachable way and strengthens both the taboo of HIV and furthers the intense cross association of the condition with homosexuality.

Lets increase awareness but in honesty. Statistics like that can be very fearful for someone who is starting to explore and identify with their sexuality.

Wasn't a similar stat recently given about the London gay population, that 1 in 5 was
HIV +. I've heard anecdotally that the done thing over there among many in the young gay community is to have unprotected sex, for some weird reason.

No the fact that anyone suffers from HIV, an entirely preventable disease, is disgusting.

ah now in some cases (births in Africa) it isn't always easily preventable and I don't think describing it as disgusting is right either - their might be HIV positive people reading this who would feel stigmatised by your use of language such as 'disgust' - the HIV virus is a reality - Your disgust doesn't help really do anything about that

What a harsh and rather uncharitable view.

Besides, it's never entirely preventable unless someone becomes celibate.

In these cases then you are right it is a tragedy beyond all measure however the facts still bare it out to be preventable but in THIS THREAD we are not taking about mother to offspring transfer we are clearly talking about m2m transfer for which there is no excuse and that is totally tragic.

Harsh? Uncharitable? How fucking very dare you. I sorry but that obnoxious prejudiced comment has caused me to be very upset. I think it is disgusting that anyone has to suffer aids when it is preventable and you have the nerve to call me uncharitable? Whats wrong with you... you fucking prick?

Mr Shaggy I am genuinely like type-crying. I didn't type anything original I read what I read an re-posted it here. When I read the report i was sickened and frightened and motivated. I want aids and hiv to go away but it like never will until we face the facts that confront us... if we don't there is a real danger they will infect us.

No just because I express an opinion which differs to you does not infact make me an idiot. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR M2M TRANSFER OF AIDS. NONE. Wear a condom. Studies have shown that in discordant couples the transfer rate was 0, yes ZERO. I'm sorry the facts that i read upset peple but like frankly they should. We can stop this. We could stop it now. We can't if we live in a dream world.

And yet you live in one! Condoms break, shit happens. Awareness is important but don't insult people who were truly hit by an accident

To be fair, thats like saying Pregnancy is entirely preventable, accidents will happen. Hetrosexual couples who use protection and have no intention of starting a family often find themselves pregnant, this obviously involves sperm getting through so unless the survey was very small or the people surveyed very lucky i dont think its very accurate. There are bound to be couples where one person has HIV and despite practicing safe sex has infected the other.

The facts didn't upset people -your attitude of disgust did - I think we are all aware that condoms can help in the prevention of HIV in men who who have sex with men but the only way to completely stop it is for everyone to become celibate

These 'statistics' are scary but not a true reflection on reality. Did they really round up ALL the gay and bisexual men in these 21 cities and had them ALL tested? I very much doubt it.
HIV is a frightening thing. Yes, treatment has come a long way and continues to be developed and improved. Living with HIV is no longer the 'death sentence' it once was. But the real scary thing about HIV is that most people who have it, dont even know they have it.

The only statistic people need to concern themselves with is themselves and those they chose to have relations with. Common sense, awareness and education to the dangers out there are what are key here.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, albeit one others dont agree with. Its so sad to come into a discussion as serious as this and see needless nit picking and ignornace on the issue.

To me what's even more lamentable than your callouness is the fact that a 22 year old gay man can be so intollerant and blinkered. You're attitudes sound extremely right wing. HIV is a serious and stigmatisng infection. And to hear someone so young being so judgemental and hostile just goes to show what a lot of work needs to be done in this country around tolerance and support.
