Royal Vauxhall Tavern: ANOTHER London gay venue 'threatened by developers'
A gay venue where Lily Savage once started a riot has become the latest to be threatened with closure.
The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, which featured in last year's hit film Pride, was sold to property developers last year. Campaigners say the Austrian firm have not said what will be done with the iconic venue.
Now Bafta-winning Pride writer Stephen Beresford has added his name to an appeal to safeguard the bar's future.
It comes days after the abrupt closure of popular cabaret haunt the Black Cap in Camden, a favourite with gay and drag acts.
The campaign to keep the tavern open - RVT Future - wants to get the building listed, and has submitted a bid to Historic England. Campaigners including performance artist David Hoyle and the stars of regular tavern night Duckie have pledged to work with the new owners to keep it open.
