I mean to the entire public, or at least anyone who wants to know everything about my career. A lot of companies still don't use linkedin or only use it as a secondary source. I get loads of interviews without it - I had one for UCD last week and I've one for AIB next week. I understand that there are certain jobs where you need to be quite active on all the social and professional networks but those jobs don't appeal to me.

Just like all other networking sites you can lock your privacy and only the people you want to have access to your information will.

Mmmm yes but there's always those people who it would be awkward to reject if they request an add. I'm only saying it's not for me.

The only connects I reject are those that are merely adding you to their network to sell. Polo LinkedIN is really only for the very career minded or business owners.
It is NOT a social network.

Only? It's not as if they screen you before you join. Lots of my college classmates have added me now and I wouldn't want any of them seeing my CV. Likewise I was able to look up my cousin a while back out of noseyness and see her entire (pathetic) career.

Do people use linkedin? how do you use it? I applied for a job recently and someone who works in more or less the same job added me - I'm not sure if it's a coincidence - I don't use linkedin that much. Should I contact her? I am half expecting to be called for interview for the job.

As Maradadi said its a very good networking tool.
Be carefull not to add contacts you do not really know. Only add people you really do know.
We use it for sales all the time.
If I had somethink lets say in Hair products to sell I could serch people in that industry. Two ways then first join any groups linked to that industry and just post a message on group. this is an add to an exact market.
secondly you serch contacts and you find people in that industry have shared connections with you. Say you have a friend John. When you sherch industries you want you find Mary who you dont know but you see she is connected with John who you do know.
You simply contact John and ask him to introduce you to Mary.
As you can imagine this can go a long way and through different degrees of connections.
Its amazing how connected people can be and not even realise it. Turns out someone you know from the gym is actually friends with a person you have been tring to get to know for work for ages etc
Very good whe you get the hang of it.
