Yeah, I get emails like this too but I just promptly delete them without a second thought. What's more sinister are spam messages pretending to be from my bank and asking for my account details.

I would imagine the IRS email could be a phishing thing - they get people to submit details in the hopes of getting money and then get fleeced.

My dad is a liability with this sort of thing. He takes every Saudi Arabia prince looking to invest in Ireland at face vale (he forwarded that one to me the other day in case I wanted to get involved)!

He was convinced once that the European commission had randomly selected him for a scholarship to return to third level education without him ever applying for it.

He also signed my mother up to once of those stupid subscription text services that cost a €10 a week trying to get €2 free credit (even though she's on bill) and then gave out to her when she got a sky high phone bill!

Welcome back Starfire

I think spammers are just thinking up new and original ways to con people. There was a fake Revenue Commissioners one as Gaeilge recently saying that you were due a refund. The phishers used Babelfish or similar to translate it. Fooled a few people, apparently.

The email address of an acquaintance was hacked recently.

I knew it was fake but this was well done. I replied to it to tell her but someone had changed the reply to address on her email. Someone else actually believed it.
