Priceless artefacts stolen from a church in Tipperary got me thinking about the shocking hypocrisy of many religions (especially Catholicism)regarding charity for the poor whilst simulataneously boasting extravagent priceless wealth in the form of gold, jewels and billions of euro in real estate

Should the pope not decide to feed the starving, cloth the naked, house the poor rather than rock gold chains?

In a time of global recession, are catholics not embarressed and outraged at this decadence when their religion was founded on the doctrine of charity and poverty by a barefoot pennyless carpenter

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."Mark 10:25

"The church roof needs repair, we must raise 25,000. Please give generously"

Fuck you.
Biggest money making scheme ever.
Do you really need to go to a church every sunday to hear the same thing over and over? Ive not been since i was about 15 but i can still recite it word for word.

Stay at home, pray with your family, invite your friends over to pray.
There is no reason to waste so much money on the church, the bling within, the priests house, the priests staff (nuns) etc.

To be fair to the church they have liquid assets worth billions, use a combination of superstition and social engineering to manipulate the educational political and economic systems of developing countries, necessitating the need for Charity in the first place

Im sorry but they are supposed to be the good guys, how can you justify telling starving people "god is love, heaven exists, worldly possessions are unimportant" whilst wearing gold chains and living in a palace?

Okay so I can acknowledge the fact that they possess enormous assets and that this is perhaps hypocritical however that doesn't change the fact that they are the biggest charity in the world.
Secondly the claim that the Church is responsible for the need for charity in these countries is a new one on me. I had thought it was environmental factors, such as droughts, corruption or incessant war fare but I guess it is because the Jesuits opened up schools.

They aren't but then neither are any of us who live in an insanely privileged world.

Ah here, you can't blame the church for the state of the economy in many developing countries. They aren't the ones installing corrupt dictators or maontaing unfair trade regimes.

And while charity organisations can often direct aid in a manner that does more harm than good, secular and governmental charities are just as bad as an religious ones.

Its one thing to say that we,normal irish people, are wildly wealthy by third world standards.....of course we are.....but im not the one pretending to be the living embodiment of the Word of God on earth, and im not the one preaching to millions of devoted followers that they will only get to heaven if they do as i say not as i do

as for the catholic church not being at least partially responsible for keeping the third world down and in constant war ive got two words for you
AIDS.........MISSIONARIES

Aids, yes they have a role to play, though they didn't start Aids and drug companies are also responsible.

As for missionaries, how do they harm the economy. If anything they provide education.

Don't get me wrong, no fan of missionaries ad they have destroyed countless cultures but don't thik you can really say there are currently engaged in economic sabotage of the third world.

No but as a collective society we bang on constantly about the need for solidarity, about looking out for one another, social responsibility, ethical consumerism etc etc... meanwhile we spend billions in Penny's and other equally "equitable" employers, spend trillions on make-up and donate huge amounts of money to animal charities when another human being dies from starvation every 2.43 seconds.

I didn't and wouldn't suggest that they bear no responsibility they bear an enormous amount, especially in relation to Aids but at the same time balance is needed I feel.

well either way, would you agree with me that its disgusting, hypocritical and above all (as should be the case if they were honest) UNGODLY to sport gold chains, jewels and palaces when the god they represent on earth supposedly preached poverty, modesty and a distaste for earthly possessions?

the bibles, especially the new testament is basically a manifesto for poverty being
synonymous with virtue, and Greed with Evil
