Mars Rover’s penis ‘drawing’ goes viral

NASA’s Mars Rover is back in the headlines, but not for making any major discovery on the red planet. An image of the Rover’s tracks reveal that it apparently drew a penis on the surface of Mars.

The image was discovered on Reddit, where it has received over 2,800 ‘up’ votes. The user who posted it titled the post, “Mars Rover = $800m, Team to Operate = $1b. Drawing a penis on the surface of another planet = Priceless.” Another user found the image on NASA’s site, proving that it is real and The Huffington Post UK reports that the frenzy the photo caused lead to NASA’s site crashing momentarily.

While the photo is making the rounds on the Internet this week and earned NASA a ‘Tiny Triumph’ spot on last night’s Colbert Report, it is actually nine years old. According to NBC News, it was part of the panorama image the rover took when it landed.

The Spirit and Opportunity Rovers both have six wheels and when they have to make a turn, the wheel pattern makes the phallic-like pattern. And despite its age, the Internet is still having fun with the image.

They really should have found a better phrase to use than "goes viral" while talking about penises

The image in question is one that the now defunct Mars rover Spirit took back in 2004 not long after it landed. It is totally random and coincidental - trust some imbecile on the web to dream up its phallic connotations!

Nasa almost lost the Fermi Telescope.

In March 2012, NASA's Fermi space telescope could have collided with a Russian naval signals satellite, were it not for an untested maneuver.
