The funny thing is, he's probably right. There are too many Republican pundits, bloggers, bloviators, all doing the same circle jerk. One of the biggest bullshit fantasies they entertain is the "culture wars" idea, which matters a ton to keyboard warriors and Fox News donkeys but really doesn't fly with regular voters other than fundies, I reckon.
The majority of Americans are fairly liberal (e.g. abortion - even in many Mountain West Republican states) or closely divided on moral issues (e.g. gay marriage) but are hostile to the growth of the public-sector and hawkish on balanced budgets. But for the 40%+ who are rightwing on social issues, it helps fire up th GOP base. There are culture wars between those for whom moral issues comes first or foremost, but the primary issue motivating American voters is Big/Small Government. Nonetheless, in a close election like this could be, the difference could come down to firing up the respective parties' base and that's where this comes in.
