It's possible Russia is sending a signal it will not tolerate Western intervention. There is also speculation Israel doesn't want the Opposition to win, given a rapproachment with the Assad regime in recent years.

Nothing but sad news coming out of Syria.

Barrel bombs being dropped from aircraft; refugees that left the country have topped 1 million.

Just today news that a 75-year old Dutch born priest, Frans van der Lugt, who was a virtual prisoner in war torn Homs was killed.

Here's a quote from him:
"The Syrian people have given me so much, so much kindness, inspiration and everything they have. If the Syrian people are suffering now, I want to share their pain and their difficulties."

One thing that really annoys me about the coverage of this is the disgust that it is an Australian boy in the photos. As if we westerners were innately better humans than those "others" from places like Syria.
