Email Spam, I've Been Hacked

# 1 : Friday 16-11-2012 @ 16:47

I got some wonderful phone calls from concerned friends this morning as my email was hacked and sent out messages to everyone in my contact lists, most people knew that from the way the email was set up that it wasn't me and I changed my password as soon as I got the calls but it was too late the damage was done, I know some of my poor technophobes will have clicked the links as some of them sent me emails where you could read their confused face.

Have you been affected by those who have too much time on their hands so mess up other people's lives?

are you sure you don't have a virus?

update your anti-virus software
then run a full scan

All done Kev, luckily herself is a computer programmer so I rang her and she logged into my computer and did her wizardry.

I think it may have actually come from my phone, running everything on that now too.

Not very likely as they use different OS/email clients, but there have been reports of phones getting virus infections. http://www.combofix.org/how-to-protect-your-mobile-phone-from-vir etc ...

I know somebody who was going for a lecturing job a few years ago. Her email account was infected by a virus, and it sent messages to all her contacts two days before her interview. One of the people who got an email from her was the external, independent member of the interview board.

I think someone must have hacked my Paypal account amonth or two ago because I was charged by a dating website I never heard of before. Thankfully Paypal has an investigate button which I used and was soon refunded. Paypal links your email address to your account.

I can't be sure how they do this, but I assume keyloggers must be involved.

Have you been hacked?

Imagine – I was surprised to get an email from my own email address trying to sell me something for enlarging my penis – odd but true.

I was so glad that is wasn't my professional email that the virus got, that was awful for her.

This is a sneaky one:

Your Amazon.com order DO3542781‏

Good day,

Thanks for your order. We’ll let you know once your item(s) have dispatched. You can view the status of your order or make changes to it by visiting Your Orders on Amazon.com.
Order Details

Order VP6716815 Placed on December 8, 2013

Order details and invoice in attached file.

Need to make changes to your order? Visit our Help page for more information and video guides.

We hope to see you again soon. Amazon.com

I havn't ordered anything from Amazon so needless to say I didnt open the attachment (zip file) but I have placed orders on other sites like amazon and at this time of year people are ordering from amazon etc so it would be easy for someone to get tricked with this one.

I was on my emails and all of a sudden this timer clock came up and then it said I had been going into sites that were restricted by law and the gardaí and pay 100 euros. logo came up and I could not get into my computer just the logo was on the screen and a note saying to unlock call the gardai. I had to go and pay loads of money to get my computer working again. This scam -- known as 'the Police Trojan' -- targets victims with the police logo of whatever country they are in, demanding they pay a fine to have their computer unlocked.

It has been reported in at least 18 European countries; in Italy, 4,000 victims have been reported to have this Trojan virus.
