2013... How Do You Say It?

Back in the 20th century, we had no problems all saying the year in the same way.

Nineteen Twenty
Nineteen Twelve
Nineteen Fifty
Nineteen Forty Five
and so on.

When it came to the year 2000, suddenly we all had different ways of saying the year 2000, 2001 and so on. It is now 2013. There was an article about 2012. Some interesting things in there.

How do YOU say 2013?

I say Twenty Thirteen.

In 2012, I said Twenty Twelve.

Now, I say Two Thousand and Thirteen. (I need to pick n stick really ) I hate the way a lot of American news anchors neglect the 'and'.

I don't particularly like the mouthful that is 'Two Thousand and Thirteen' though.

I did say "Two Thousand And..." when it was single figures but since 2010 I've been saying "Twenty..."

We didn't call it One Thousand Nine Hundred and Ninety Six, it was Nineteen Ninety Six, so the same should apply for the... what do we call this decade? The 00's were the "noughties" to most people, so what name ending in "ies" can we apply to 2010-2019? The teens?

Twenty thirteen, but sometimes 'shorten' it to oh thirteen.... A residue of the first decade.

Finally, thank you... you have given me a logic to use Twenty Thirteen I never noticed that before

That's me too I think. I actually don't know how I've been saying it.

I'll go with twenty thirteen from now on though.

Two zero one three

Nah, I kid, twenty thirteen just rolls off the tongue. Is it quicker to sign that way Intrepid?

yes, two hand movements as opposed to three.

In many signing communities around the world particularly in the US, there was a parallel heated debate as to how to sign the years.

A lot of people signed the numbers individually, 2000-2009, but here in Ireland, things changed when we reached 2010. some still sign 2-0-10, others 20-10, but now there is still overlap. I'll post this question on FB and see what people have to say, then get back to here.

When it comes to speaking, I just say twenty thirteen.

I seem to meld the thou'sand' and 'and' together in a move similar to rock 'n' roll.

2013?

Two Thousan'n' Thirteen

Usually, neither of the d's survive, but if one does it's usually the second one.

Two Thousan'nd Thirteen
