Isle Of Man. Anyone Been?

# 1 : Friday 5-7-2013 @ 20:01

As we say "Tynwald Day" to our Celtic Brethren on the Isle of Man on their national day, I wonder have many Gaireans been? Is the ferry expensive? Is there much to do there and what is a night out in Douglas like?

The thoughts of my ma going around the race track on the back of some greasers bike back in the 50's has turned me off the place

I only remember going with my ma about 20 years ago. The illumination and all that.

Are you sure you are not confusing it with the Blackpool Illuminations?

I've being a few times - not too expensive. I went to see the Mannanan Mac Lir celebrations ("payment to the sea") and hang out with a few beautifully odd people.

The pubs are good, the people friendly in a way that they havent become too cynical to tourists and the views are amazing - even on a bad day

It's cool for cats, the ride up Snaefell is one highlight. Years since I was there always remember it as the place I discovered milkshakes, heaven.

By ferry - a few time by foot, and once by car - the car wasnt essential though as the access there is pretty grand.

Around €100 altogether for both of us, return.

We usually shop around but aferry.ie seems to be the best though theferryspot.com has a good deal now and again. The most we've paid for with two, return and with car was €120

Nope.

I think given the massive influx from England it's questionable whether they are still "Celtic brethren" (except maybe a large minority or half of them).

The culture and language is Celtic in origin and they would see themselves as a Celtic island.
