Do Away With Coppers: Another Euro Rounding-tax?

# 1 : Tuesday 3-9-2013 @ 20:51

It is finally starting in Wexford.
They are experimenting with doing away with the small change, 1 and 2 euro-cents.
Prices will NOT change.
But the total bill will be rounded up or down to closest 5 cents.

Down: Anything costing 1, 2 cents will be free.
Up: Anything costing 3, 4 cents will cost 5 cents.
Down: Anything costing 6, 7 cents will cost 5 cents.
Up: Anything costing 8, 9 will cost 10.

That should iron out the process and find out about real-life issues.

Do you trust the process, or do you feel it will be another "Euro rounding tax"?

(Note 1: in other countries they will not allow you to pay the 5 cents with 1 and 2 cents combined. they are done away with!)
(Note 2: during the trial it will be on a voluntary basis. You can decline!)

I think they are doing it in Wexford to start with and it will be on a volunteered basis, and from what I heard it's not rounding each item up to the nearest 5cent, (well that is the plan at the moment) what they are doing is when you get the overall total for your bill it will be rounded up or down to the nearest 5cent.

Why would you close down a business that pays people well?

When I was in Brazil in the late 90's I was perplexed when the cashier gave me a sweet instead of change........that was their system of dealing with it!. Otherwise I thought the balance of the monies from rounding up and down was to be given to charity!, which I support.
