Mental Health Stigmas

Well a doctor told me a while back it was a serious mental disorder. I may seem normal in my behaviour now but when I was in school it was dreadful because I was so terrified of crowds that I would run in them so as to limit how long I'd be in them by getting to destination earier. So I was called a freak in school. I had the same behaviour on the street. As I got older I grew out of it but I sortof have to blank out the crowd so I won't be afraid. My mother told me it gets better as you get older but it never goes away. It is also known as high functioning autism.

I'm not surprised as an AS sufferer of these findings. I feel I have to mention my AS in interviews or else misunderstandings will occur in the workplace at how shy and nervous I am around people. I have literally never had a job.

Fortunately a NDP/FAS group called Employability are going to put me on 2 days work experience and then try to get me an internship to earn €50 a week and then maybe next year a WIT course on the gaming industry. Ultimately I hope this and my existing IT qualifications (from 8 yrs ago) on web design and computer skills e.g. Excel/Access/Word will help with this, along with maybe my practical experience with modding.

Good luck with the internship

I have it on the senior authority of a Consultant Psychiatrist here in Dublin, among other Consult Psychs I know, that "Diagnostic Statistical Manual, DSM5" largely used in U.S.A. and less so here, but even has taken off AS as a disorder. Psychologists here in Ireland haven used it in years and a re loathe to eve give patients names for their conditions to avoiding the patient being stigmatised.

I actually just read a great article on Stigma perpetuated by mental health labels, on the societal level, self internalized stigma and label avoidance.

I'll post it tomorrow... is there wah to upload PDF files to Gaire?

I blame Religion, they created this problem and who do you blame for these attitudes towards mental illness?
