Polls: A Post Should Not Be Accepted When A Vote Is Not Cast!

# 1 : Tuesday 15-10-2013 @ 22:25

When a pollster puts up a poll the idea is for those with an opinion to cast a vote!, not to engage in 'barstool' opining!
I propose that such posters should be blocked from commenting though it would possibly be a good idea I suppose to include a 'don't know' in all polls or perhaps call it 'just saying' attention seeking/ trolling.

Whaddya think??

Perhaps the site can make it impossible to post without first casting a vote? when it's a poll.

I see some merit in the proposal but don't know if it's technically feasible.

However I would keep a don't know option. I have noticed with gaire polls you can change your vote which is good.

Can you change your vote?? or is it that you can go back on and vote 'yes' when you've previously voted 'no'...........sitting on the fence type of thingy!
I was looking for the 'rolling eyes' but ........yeah ......this will do

From what I have found, when you have already voted, and you vote again a different way, your vote just switches to the new vote and it doesn't add a new vote to the total.

Part of what makes Gaire great. Don't think other forums let you do that.

So if the poll is about favourite biscuit and the OP has forgotten to include jersey creams, the poster who loves Jersey creams has to select goldgrain just so they can point out that the poll is deficient and skew the figures in favour of an inferior biscuit while waiting for the OP or an admin to correct this heinous crime about biscuits?

It doesn't add a new vote, it negates the previous vote!

I would suggest the poll was faulty in it's conception in the first case. Where a defined selection of 'biscuits' is the subject of the poll any other biscuit would be 'off topic'.

Though, I do get your point and one could also include an objections tick box to flag up such a defficiency for the senior administrators to address! Such an objector would need to get off their 'barstool' and make a statement!

These are message boards, if you take away the ability to post messages it kind of defeats the purpose.

Perhaps other boards you've been on has more of an issue with this. The trolling you've referenced isn't prolific enough to warrant reprogramming the site.

I AM SPECIFICALLY REFERRING TO POLLS! NOT POSTS.

My response was in relation to threads containing polls. You've referenced in your opening post "attention seeking/ trolling", which I can re-confirm isn't a prolific problem in the threads that include polls.

The message boards are there to post opinions (barstool or otherwise) and the polls are an enhancement to a thread, the thread isn't an enhancement to a poll.

This would require a Gaire Referendum, I'd say. Could be a very divisive campaign on both sides!

I'd say a poll is order.
