I don't get the problem with traveler's tombs. Why single them out?
They like things in life to be big and colorful like their wedding etc so they like to show off how well they made it in life. Not all travelers have a chance to earn a good leaving and get a good education because of this kind of discrimination so when they do why not show that they made it till the end?

a) how are these massive ostentatious headstones paid for ?
one of the reasons it is illegal in most cemeteries in Ireland to exceed a certain height or format is most honest working settled people cannot afford garish monstrosities for headstones, infact the cost of a memorial and funeral is often enough to near bankrupt most families, coming often hot on the heels of medical expenses.

so ordinary working folk erect legal sized headstones, so that no ones deceased loved one is overshadowed by undignified eye sores

b) @eithne answer honestly, how would you feel if two huge illegal monstrosities
were erected either side of a deceased loved ones legal memorial? be honest now...

Laws are laws, its not discrimination

Headstones and Kirbing, should be done away with and just have a plaque level with a lawn of grass!

I agree, pardon the pun but it would be a great leveller
Have everyone even, no one overshadowed.

Also it would remove the financial pressure on families
You can still have inscriptions, photos whatever you like on the stones

If you are stupid enough to bury your dead, I don't see how it is less tacky than traveler's tack. Its part of your culture? Its part of theirs too!

You completely ignored Borstal's key point. Laws are laws. Rules are rules.

Eithne,
its not part of traveller culture to have huge headstones, its only since the social welfare became so generous has this started,i live in a highly traveller populated town and these headstones are a relatively new thing as are the so called "colourfull" gypsy weddings,so none of that culture b###shite,i know because i have to live with it and more outrageous its getting as they compete with eachother.

....Travellers have been erecting huge headstones for generations nothing to do with welfare money...

Here in my town there are lots from the 50's and 60's and reflect the traveller cultural stance that bigger is better when honouring your dead.....
Sadly some have no respect for a new initative that everyone would adhere to a small headstone in the new graveyard....Despite this many travellers encroached on space and erected massive stones....
I personally have no problem with what people do with their money but have respect for others....

It would be a grave mistake if not a monumental disaster if they were to be banned, they bring life to an otherwise dead place,in my opinion.

If it is the law, why are authorities not removing them?
Because they are legal. So I did not ignore anything worth noticing
