The Legion of Mary Society in NUI Galway were campaigning on campus with a so-called ‘Purity Matters Initiative’, featuring the slogan: ‘I’m a child of God. Don’t call me gay’.

Not banned the college chapter of the Legion of Mary was suspended as a result. It was on a few news sites couple of days or so ago.

Ronan Mullen was Students Union president back when it was UCG so must be something in the water on campus

I don't really know if I agree that the organisation should have been suspended. Of course the leaflet was regrettable and I wish they'd just choke on the penis they secretly crave but still, in a university I think that censorship is particularly concerning.

The university is not a free agent on the matter, and if it did not respond to the poster could have been liable financially if any students took cases for harassment on the sexual orientation ground under the Equal Status Acts.

Well in light of the legal liability it was certainly the correct action for the admins to take but leaving that aside, it still worries me. Which is more dangerous for gay people in the long run, hate speech or a society that bans those it disagrees with?(I know society didn't ban them, I am just pondering wildly.)

[I have no problem for the discussion to move it out of the specific of NUIG's action to your broader question.]

I think you're not comparing like with like. Hate speech and something I disagree with are not the same, and neither is the same as harassing speech under the equality legislation.

By coincidence, this week my reading on the bus to work has been an essay by Glen Newy reviewing a book that discusses where the boundaries should be. I think non-subscribers can access it here: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v35/n23/glen-newey/unlike-a-scotch-egg
