Should Murders/Executions Be Shown On The News?

# 1 : Wednesday 11-12-2013 @ 01:06

Channel 4 aired the murder of a French troop in the Central African Republic during a news report this evening. Over the years I have seen several executions and murders from Iran, Rwanda, Bosnia, Iraq ect and I've always found them deeply unsettling. Should murders be broadcast because that is the world we live in or should they be shown after the watershed as with other horrible scenes or not shown at all?

I think there should be ample warning.

And some things definitely shouldn't be shown, like beheadings and suchlike.

I don't think it should be shown.
It empowers the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.

Definitely, the media publicity around beheadings gave encouragement to the killers, who were looking for publicity. Once the media made a concerted effort to play down the drama, the incidents started to dwindle.

I think any guys waiting on death row should all be executed live on TV. They should put 20 of them in a stadium, cameras everywhere, and let them kill eachother until theres one last person standing. Would be the biggest ever TV show on the planet. Think of the taxpayers money we would save.

Yes murders/executions should be shown on the news both before and after the watershed.

...What an awful thought.Taking eye for an eye too far..There are many people on death row with dubious convictions, thank God they didn't hang the Birmingham Six et al publicly!..I believe in justice for crime but this notion is plain sick...Imagine if the SA government had decided to hang Mandela for his supposed crimes against the state would you have publicly bayed for his blood in a stadium?

Whatever about adults, children should be shielded from distressing material.

No I do not think they should be shown on the news. Videos like this are so incredibly sensitive that they should not be subject to commodification which I think is inevitable in our current media set-up. In addition what of the rights of the victim, and their family? In normal circumstances a release is required for many videos, I think that protection should be doubly important given the circumstances.

Children shouldn't be shielded from the truth about the world.
That makes the transition to adulthood more difficult.

There should be no circumstances under which we allow the broadcasting of such material at any hour. Soldiers, Police and ordinary citizens around the world regularly suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after having been exposed to events which lead to the deaths of others and we do not need such issues trivialised or reduced to the commonplace by daily showing the deaths of other human beings. There are many out there who would love it but the majority of ordinary civilised people do not want such scenes publicly aired, it is enough for us to know that such events are repeated on a daily basis around the world.

If the victim was Alan Hughes I think it should definitely be shown. It would be in the public interest to witness this obnoxious creep get his just rewards. I would give Nigella the knife myself.
