Income And Tax Transparency

# 1 : Thursday 23-1-2014 @ 19:37

The situation about charities has got me thinking a lot about the issue of transparency. There are always calls for wages of politicians, civil servants and people working for charities to publish their salary details. At the moment income inequality is ironically and bizarrely enough being debated in Davos at the World Economic Forum.

Anyway I think that we in Ireland should have a similar system to Norway. Make everyones income and tax details publicly available.

The wealthy would pay someone to show that their details are in compliance with the law.

I don't like the idea of that system, it would hardly stop people from hiding money away.

I'm not sure why you framed your question in that way. Firstly I never claimed a "right", secondly it's nothing to do with my desire to pry.

Firstly - doing this would promote openness and transparency.
Secondly it could be used as a tool to promote income equality

I framed my question that way because it reflected my reaction to your suggestion.

What I meant is that the wealthy would pay someone to provide false details when the truth is that they are not tax compliant.

I never understood how someone could be a a top-paid executive in a charity.
Why do they not do it for free, part time? As THEIR contribution to the charity if the charity is what they care about.

They are not charities.
Never. Were.
Never. Will. Be.
They. Are. Just. Businesses. And. Tax. Escape.

I can assure you I am not putting this suggestion as some of personal prurient desire.

The logic - and accepted social value in Norway - is that tax is your contribution to the society that enables you to get that income and part of your obligation is that others have the right to see how you met your socosl obligations.

Because not everyone runs a charity.
If I ask you for €50 to feed a dying baby, and I keep €40, I am not a charity but a scammer. It is a scam and a sham!

A lot of charity workers work for free people in the office who raise funds dont take a cut and anyone making a profit from peoples' generozity is just a bad person worst than some priests who take money from collections.

Sounds like a cat scan, as they'd say in Limerick.
