New Union Jack Flag Post Scottish Independence

If Scotland does the unthinkable and vote yes for independence it will render the UK's Union Jack flag obsolete.

As far as I can gather the blue will be gone from the Union Jack and maybe some of the White.

I'd be interested in seeing some Gairean artistic attempts at a new Union Jack flag in case Scotland does do the unthinkable.

It would be interesting yeah, but I think the UK shouldn't have to change their flag, it could remain the same, why not? It's a reflection of history it doesn't have to be an up to date version of what the country is.

Some people wanted to change the Portuguese flag and anthem when we lost our Empire and changed regime back in the mid-seventies but why the fuck bother? It didn't change, thank fuck, they would probably pick something awful and communist-looking.

Probably the Union Flag without the Flag of St Andrew. But Wales might complain it is being sidelined again. Constitutionally Wales is part of England under the 1520 Laws in Wales Acts.

Also it's possible the old Union Flag will remain as for royal use just as it (pre the red-saltire representing Ireland) was during 1603-1707 when the 2 countries had the same monarch but separate parliaments. The term "Union Jack" comes from Jacobus which is the Latin for James. James I invented it.

The flag is called the Union Flag I believe it is only called The Union Jack when flown from a ship.

I actually saw a flag expert discuss this on TV recently. He reckons they'd be mad to change the flag and that they simply won't do it.

Basically, if they changed one thing, then there would be endless requests to 'fix' other elements. For instance, Wales is not included by itself at all. And then there's the fact that the entire flag is comprised of Christian symbols, so why not Islam or Jewish? Why have religious iconography at all?

He also raised the point that the Union Jack is too iconic to be changed now. So it's really unlikely that they will touch it.

There's lots of flags around the world that retain parts that are no longer relevant so I don't see why it would be necessary to amend it. It is far too iconic to touch, in my opinion.

Looks awful, and there's a veritable industry of union flag merchandise that would be lost, no way "hosay"

It is a bit bare and spartan looking all right.

I wonder what the new Scottish flag would look like.?

Would it have to be any different to the current Scottish flag?

Yes, yes they do. That's the main reason flags are a thing.
