Health minister calls for a packet of cigarettes to be hiked to €20 a packet. A fair enough proposal or just plain bullying of smokers?

Either ban them or fuck off.
Raising the prices is cruel to those addicted and is potentially causing a lot of problems for many people who are finding themselves spending more and more on an addiction they cant break and having less to spend on essentials.

They should be putting more money into helping people break their habit, not charging them more to be addicted.

I'd be in favour of a total ban rather than the draining away of a persons money just because they are hooked on nicotine

The price is already ludicrously expensive. I guess as he is soon to be replaced he can spout nonsense like this without fear.

While cigarettes are very harmful this will only lead to more people buying packets from street vendors and there is no quality control when it comes to putting their products together.
People need to embrace the E-Cigs sooner rather than later.

Perhaps the people who voted for it being fair could explain why they believe it is fair?

Even to a nicotine nazi like myself, this is just ludicrous, they should be allowing e smokers more leeway instead of demonising them, reilly really is a few cigs short of a twenty pack.

I would be very interested how someone could think that paying 500%+ tax on a product is fair?

@ Elat, possibly non smokers with an eye on the associated HSE costs or those who have lost someone to a smoking related illness.

That said drinkers and those with poor diets are not being punished to the same degree if health costs is the main reason for the massive ciggy taxes.

The average smoker pays more than their fair share already with the tax on cigarettes and I lost my dad to a smoking related illness and I still think €20 a packet is ridiculous. The onus should be on helping people quit than blindly robbing those who smoke.

This is a complete smoke and mirrors exercise, there's no way the government will ever do this. This is just putting the shits up the tobacco industry so they play nice with the blank cigarette packets. This government are so bad at spin, it's so obvious what they are doing.

That sort of 'tough love' leads to suicides, child neglect, homelesness, crime etc etc.

You cant simply price an addict out of an addiction, its a stupid and dangerous idea.
There are addicts of all sorts of drugs out committing crimes every day to help feed their habbit, that is what you will get from this sort of 'tough love'

What can the government do for them?
Well they can accept they are adults and choose to smoke and not put up the prices for starters. There is no need to raise the prices, none at all.

How about they offer more help for people who want to quit, instead of trying to force them to quit by pricing them out of it.

How about they have more education in schools on the dangers of smoking and addiction.

They offer lots of help, what else do you think they should do? And it remember lots of anti smoking lectures in school, big dirty lungs and everything.
