Poolbeg Chimneys - Would You Miss Them?

# 1 : Thursday 30-4-2015 @ 00:23

So the ESB has decided that since the Poolbeg power plant has shut down, they should get rid of the two chimneys as well. Personally, I think that they are an important Dublin landmark. I say nay to plans to get rid of the chimneys!

They are very imposing and I love riding past them on the train. Makes me turn my head and stare.

Get the 'RA in to do the job.
They did a very neat operation on Nelson's Pillar.

Then of course the Army came in to finish it off and almost took out half of inner Dublin.

There is an equally stunning twin of Poolbeg I came across 13 years ago while driving my moped to Cork city, Dunno its name. Or at least it was there.

Pleased to hear they're staying. Went for a rosemantic walk up to the lighthouse on Saturday and reflected on how sad it would be to lose them from the Dublin skyline.

I'm very glad to hear that the chimneys are staying. They really are a feature on the Dublin skyline.

A spokesperson added: “The chimneys are a well-known landmark in the Dublin skyline, distinguished by their height, as Dublin does not have significant high rise development.

perfect reason to keep them!
It wouldn't bother me if they were gone. Some people might be nostalgic for them now but that's just one or two generations. Do they have any architectural or historical merit? No. They would be forgotten in a few decades. Think long term.. unless they are going to make a feature / attraction out of them like a viewing deck then why leave them?

Hypothetically, could they be re-purposed somehow?
