Sausages would be more processed than rashers? Wouldn't they?

Yes they would, they're made from recovered bits of meat and lard. Rashers are much closer to being real meat.

The issue is not only that foods are "processed" but how they are processed. Washing bad, cheap meat with ammonia is a very different process to, for example, refining sugar. Which is also a process.

Of course sugar is unealthy. But some of the stuff used to process meats is literally poison.

I believe the ammonia washing process is illegal in Europe but that doesn't mean much, not too long ago we were all unwittingly chowing down on old cheap dead horses while being told it was beef!

It's certainly food for thought! It wont do any harm if it makes people think a bit more about what they eat. The farming representatives are up in arms over it of course but it should be a bit of a wake up call to people who eat too much processed meat.

If I was a farmer/food producer I would see this as a opportunity to market cleaner meat products.

Ireland has the opportunity to be a centre of excellence in organic farm produce, including meat.

I've read about processed meat being bad for you - a lot of ham contains added phosphates which are a known carcinogen but to deem eating bacon as bad for you as smoking is a bit ridiculous.

Yup, I agree. Smart farmers and more importantly, manufacturers should really be moving towards more sustainable and healthier meats.

Whether they will that remains to be seen, some will no doubt but mostly will rely on people ignoring health advice as they tend do and they'll keep selling their cheap, profitable meat.

I mean, sugar, alcohol, cigarettes are all really bad for you but people still eat, drink and smoke them like there's no tomorrow. Why would bad meats be any different?

I haven't read the report, but from the comments of some scientists on the internet, it looks like this is an interesting case of the research showing a small effect when you take an individual but clearly measurable increase in cancer when you look at the population as a whole.

That may well be but you'd have to be in denial to pretend processed meats are Ok.

I mean, cancer is just one of the risks associated with them, let's not forget the antibiotics in meat, and of course the saturated fats and all that shit.

Also all the pesticides used in the animal feed with be store in the animals flesh, and especially its fat.

In my opinion, tough processed meat is far from being as bad for you as cigarettes it is a very poor substitute for real, healthier meats.
