Asthma

If you had asthma, do you remember how you were diagnosed?

Me, I was told I was borderline asthmatic a few years ago. (got a bronchoscopy)

Now told I am definitely asthmatic, after listening to my upper back. Ten seconds.

I wasn't asked to use a peak flow meter or anything like that.

Was the doctor a bit too hasty in her diagnosis?

What was it like for you, if you were diagnosed with asthma? Did you get a ten minute diagnosis, ten seconds with the stethoscope? Or did you have to use a peak flow meter?

Thanks.

My sister is asthmatic, was in a chest clinic for yonks as a child..
As a result, everytime a member of her family plus children and my children ect had a wheeze, a Doc would diagnose as asthma..
It went beyond a joke, my eldest son was prescribed inhalers during the winter, I took him for a second opinon and Doc told me to throw them away...
Only one nephew has it and only slightly.

The doctor was very surprised when I told her there was NO asthma in my family.

I coughed non-stop for seven weeks, which is probably why she thought I had it.

Have you been tested for allergies?.

Well seven weeks has to be more than a cold. Is the asthma medication helping?

Maybe you need to be on a higher dose and then you might not need it once it has cleared up.

It's silly

When I was very young the doctor said I had asthma My Mother said no I didn't.

I get bad colds and coughs every Winter. The doctor told me to take inhalers every time I get a cough or cold.

So - I have it but I've never been really diagnosed with it!

Did they just explain asthma or let you know what type? etc. last year I had a cough that lasted nearly 8 weeks, I'm not asthmatic thankfully, just a challenged immune system and was more then a bit worn down.

This goes into more details: http://www.aafa.org/page/asthma-diagnosis.aspx

Either way it from what I'm reading, you don't seem too set on the diagnoses or how it was reached - worth getting a second opinion on.

What are you expecting the doctor to diagnose other than asthma?

I'll get a second opinion, thanks everyone.

Socketrocket, I was thinking of either pneumonia (which I had before, and they said if you once get it, you are more prone to further attacks.) bronchitis or an allergic reaction to something.

Asthma may be allergy related. As for the other two, the doctor must not have thought your story matched an infective cause. Since you're a non-smoker(I'm guessing) hence the diagnosis is asthma.
