The Comments Section On Journal.Ie?

# 16 : Sunday 6-5-2018 @ 11:44

Yesterday evening RTÉ news posted an article about Trump on Facebook and almost immediately the comments section was filled with American right wing profiles praising Trump. And I mean 20+ profiles and no Irish people. Looking into it, apparently Russian bot farms home into articles about him to get people arguing.

So creepy

Well you know rhe saying...empty vessels make the loudest noise. This is definitely the case with respect to the web forums and comments pages.

My point was the profiles are manufactured to create divisive discourse.

That's the point of bots, isn't it?

No, usually the point of bots is to trick people into clicking links to servers that host viruses, phishing scams, etc.

The ultimate goal of the Russian bots (which are quite often real people employed by the state) is to spread misinformation that undermines democracy, critical thinking, and multinational alliances like NATO and the EU. This all serves the Russian Agenda.

When a dumb person sees 20 people all saying the same thing, it can change their thinking as we've seen with Trumps election victory.

Doesn't have to be a dumb person. When the government opted for civil partnership nearly ten years ago, one of the key activists said to me that we need to keep talking about marriage equality.

You're missing my point. It's one thing to persuade someone to see the benefits of marriage equality and another to systematically spread lies that only dumb people could believe.

There is some crazy ass comments and fake profiles on the journal's facebook page. An article on gender equality in Irish theatre is hijacked by anti semetic trolls rattling on about communism. Very odd!
