Corporal Punishment At School: Any Memories?

# 1 : Friday 22-2-2019 @ 21:37

Corporal punishment was banned in Irish schools back in 1982 and made a criminal offense in 1997.

Do any Gaireans have memories of receiving the cane or leather strap or being slapped, hit or even beaten by their teachers?

I was a bit of a goody two shoes in school so usually avoided sanctions which were usyally lines or detention but a couple of teachers had ferocious tempers and threw blackboard dusters at us.

On another web forum a lot of older posters recounted harrowing tales of them or their parents being beaten black and blue by the Christian brothers or such. Dreadful!

I got punched by my teacher, in the bathroom and because I didn't have enough copies to cover all the subjects. Family was poor, father out of work due to a work accident but still sorted the teacher out.

In primary school I can remember having hands so sore I held them against the chair legs ( metal -cold) to ease the pain.
In secondary school It was more of the same, saw some teachers losing it of course .
The teachers in secondary were nastier and damaging - psychological damage.

A teacher raised their hand to me in temper when I was in secondary school.
I slapped the shit out of him and got expelled.

C**t would think twice before doing it again.

We had one teacher who would slap us on the hand with a ruler.

It wasn't even sore, it;s just when she did it, it was like " She HIT me!!"

It depends on your age, teachers when I was going to school had collections of things for hitting but it was nothing compared to what they did 5 or 10 years before.
Violence was just part of class lesson.

Whats your age? I’m 36 and had nothing but was really surprised that my brother had a bit of it only 9 years earlier.

I have a permanent mark on my right hand from being beaten with a cane by my primary school teacher when I was 7 years old. I can't remember what I did to "deserve" such punishment.

My classmate and friend to this day had his head pulled so violently by the hair that a handful of hair came out. My friend picked up the hair off the floor and put it in his school bag when the teacher wasn't looking and brought it home to his parents.

The next morning his parents came to the school with the parish priest and threatened to get that teacher fired but nothing ever happened to her.

Physical punishment was an accepted part of the school day for the following;
Not learning your spellings.
Not memorizing a poem.
Messy hand writing.
Talking in class.
Not doing your homework.

The level of physical violence inflicted on you depended on that teacher's mood on the day.
On a good day punishment would be;
Hit on the both hands with a cane stick, minimum 2 times.

On a bad day punishment could be any one of the following;
Slapped across the face with an open hand.
Punched to any part of the body, she wore 2 rings which inflicted a lot of pain.
Violently pulled and shook by the hair which occasionally would leave you feeling dizzy for a few seconds.

All of this would be accompanied by verbal humiliation in front of the entire class.

Hard to believe in this day and age that this level of criminal conduct would ever have been tolerated from a teacher but it was. I and my primary school classmates lived in fear of this teacher. This teacher's own 2 children went to our primary school, one of them was in my class and she treated them even worse than us.

All in the misguided name of a good education..

My mother was beaten badly but I wasn't subjected to any sort of physical violence. Just a long fingernail prodding me which did hurt.

It was despicable the level of violence meted out to small children by supposed teachers.

If I had children and anything like the above happened to them in school I would not just ensure their teachers were prosecuted for assault, but I would knock seven shades of shite out of the bastards.

They used to say the devil was in you if you were left handed.

I think it was just the decade or two before mine that were allowed to write with their left hands, you were supposed to use your right and if you didn’t youd be beaten.

It was in them, I'd say and all it did was traumatize the child.
