So, the first (and given our small population maybe the only) Center Parcs resort in Ireland, in Ballymahon forest in Longford, is due to open its doors to Irish holiday makers in the coming weeks for the summer season.
Center Parcs are completely self-contained resorts aimed at young families, although anyone can go to stay in them. There are several in the UK, the first opening in the early 1990s in Elveden Forest in East Anglia.
Each resort features a huge subtropical indoor water park at its core with accommodation in chalets or lodges located in the surrounding forest. There are a wide range of activities from cycling, to kayaking to archery, climbing, zip lines, playgrounds, sports such as tennis, playing fields etc. There are restaurants and bars and an on site supermarket.
But all of this doesn’t come cheap. A stay at a Center Parcs is pretty expensive - the Longford one charges €1,000 for 4 days for a family of four in peak season (July/August) - and that’s only for the accommodation and the indoor pool area. All the other activities cost extra.
So, any Gaireans thinking of giving it a go? Has anyone been to a Center Parcs resort? Is it worth it?
