Gareth Thomas Discloses His HIV+ Status.

# 1 : Monday 16-9-2019 @ 02:24

Gareth Thomas, former Wales rugby and Lions captain, who came out as gay in 2009, has disclosed that he is HIV+, apparently before the tabloid media “outed” him to his family.

Another brave step from a very brave man, if it helps to educate the wider public on the reality of living with HIV, a very treatable condition in 2019, and reduce the stigma about the disease.

"When I first found out that I was going to have to live with HIV, the first thing I thought was straight away: I was going to die," he said.

"It's not like I blame people for not knowing this.

He added: "The overriding question that everybody said to me - the first question everyone says to me when I tell them I'm living with HIV - is 'Are you going to be OK?'

"And it's a really compassionate question to ask. But, this is meant the nicest way possible, it's a really uneducated question."

He's kind of showing a bit of ignorance himself with those statements.. I don't engage in sex but, have still known for a number of years now that HIV is not a death sentence any more..

Well at least he's talking about it openly in public, HIV still has a huge stigma attached to it, also no one under the age of 35 seems to know much about it.

Bear in mind he’s talking about it because he was being blackmailed (not criticizing him for not specifically saying anything, rather if he hadn’t it would’ve been a great press ‘scandal’)

I guess that's a reflection of how well the treatments work, that the younger generation don't see it as a threat & it is therfore not on their radar.

I know it's worrying about those chem sex parties, "Many people pass out while using G, and experts have raised concerns about sexual assault and rape happening in such scenarios".

Ireland drastically needs a national impartial sex education imposed on all schools and national campaign to make people more aware of STI causes and treatments.
