Social distancing is mostly a voluntary thing: it cannot be enforced on large crowds.
These people take their own risks, for reasons they think are worth it. Just like a number of large weddings or funeral in the past few weeks ago: they did what they could to call them off in advance, but once they fail prevention, then the communities who decide to ignore advice will pay the price by getting more infections in their midsts.
The most vulnerable in society stay away from them anyway, so the odds that these protesters will be the source of a second wave outside of themselves is slim to none.
It does not make them less selfish or irresponsible, but the Gardaí are right to be reasoned in their approach: they might still prosecute the organizers...
