Do we have too many politicians, running our country and you think we should slim down?

FFG Merging into one Centre right party & SF forming a Left including the remnants of the Greens/Soc Dems is a terrifying prospect.. Two party systems blow (UK/US I'm looking at you).. We need to keep diversity in Politics.. Greater numbers help to prevent that I think.. I hope..

For a nation of just under 5 million (we will probably just top the 5m mark in Census 2021) we do have too many TDs but just try taking seats away in the constituencies and there would be political carnage and blue murder.

I also think the SF surge in the recent election is possibly a realigning of Irish politics away fromthe traditional old civil war politics where we have had two dominant centre-right parties, FF and FG for a century (and a much smaller scattering of left wing parties) more towards a broad right - left spectrum more typical of other modern Western democracies. The Shinners are now occupying the left-wing ground that Labour and the Soc Democrats have failed to capitalise on.

Tine will tell...

Not just TD's, a 30% cut in those numbers and there'd still be enough to run this place. But Councillors also, nearly one on every corner and what does it cost to run this Obese monster. I believe, if we reduced the quantity and may get better quality as a result?

And get full time councillors ? Professional politicians whose only goal is the next election?

The number of TDs is set down in the constitution at 1 for every 30,000 people, that's why we have so many. The only way to change that is to change the constitution. In the UK there is an MP for every 100,000 people.
In the case of Councillors it works out at about 1 for every 4,500 to 5,000 of population.
The only way to properly examine the issue is to decide where we want power to lie and how power is devolved out to Local or Regional Authorities. That will require major work on the Constitution and I don't see that happening any time soon. However, the prospect of a United Ireland will require major examination of our public representation and how it is managed and established.

When the UK government was tearing itself apart over Brexit and they basically abandoned the country the economy flourished and employment was zooming in an upwardly direction - god help us now they are back in charge lol
