Slurs At Work

# 61 : Friday 2-12-2005 @ 10:36

Maybe for some people I am making a big deal but incidents like this trigger off memories of being singled out and bullied at school for being different. So not a good scene in the work environment.

Well if he doesn't know you're gay then its not directed at you and therefore shouldn't be taken personally. Its your responsibility to tell him its not cool if it bothers you.

i fail to find any correlation between one's sexual preferences and drink preferences.

and i'd agree, no point in getting yourself so worked up over it. let it slide

It's managements responsibility to make sure people/minority groups are not being singled out and being made feel uncomfortable! This guy is meant to be a member of management he should know better! (we have laws against such things!!) My company has a very high standard of equality and I feel that's the way it should be.
Personally I wouldn't give a shite is someone said "oh that's gay" or whatever I'm comfortable enough with myself to just tell them to go shite but everone is coming from different places emotionally and that has to be taken into consideration!

SI - I’m sure you see the irony in your last post, as in it seems equally applicable to you, if not more so.

It seems my initial feeling on the overall context of the initial post proved to be correct.

Think we're being a wee bit oversensitive here.

When my girlie friends start talking about new men in their lives who have great style, interior designed homes etc., I'll tell em he's a gayer! I'd describe certain clothes as 'gay' and I don't think it's anything to get worked up over. We're not at US PC levels yet, thanks be to Jesus!

this is ridiculous! grow up a bit and stop looking at everything as a personal attack or time to pull out your sexual harrasment card! The world was alot better when it wasn't so fucking PC. What is PC anyway but a set of rules laid down by lawyers that if you step out of they'll rip cash out of you for people that don't deserve anything except a kick up the arse!

Brigand - the guy made a joke, even if it isn't a whole lot better than what passes for humour for some people here. If you can't deal with it maybe you shold be in some kind of sheltered employment. God help you when you meat real homophobia.
If you read the posts made by Pipdog you will see that his manager didn’t make a joke, he made a series of them and now he is looking for a new job.

If that’s not real homophobia then I don’t know what is.

His boss didn't make a series of jokes at his expense, Pipdog's just being over sensitive.

Blkjumper - His boss didn't make a series of jokes at his expense, Pipdog's just being over sensitive.
You know this how? If this the dismissive attitude then it no wonder we have not had one single case of discrimination taken in the entire country as yet.

Everyone agrees there are homophobes out there yet when it comes to the workplace, homophobia doesn’t exist apparently and it’s all supposed to be just a laugh. Well it’s not, it’s very serious because it ruins people’s lives and sooner or later, someone will take legal action but no doubt they will be just ‘over sensitive’ too.

Unless you know Pipdog personally and have discussed this issue with him, making such an assumptions on another poster’s personality says more about you than him. One question I am wondering Blkjumper, are you actually gay?

Pip ..if the situation reminds you of being bullied as a kid in school you have two options, either perceive it as bullying and retreat by moving job etc and as a result replaying and reinforcing all that bullying or else you can take the bull by the horns and defend that little kid..now that you are an adult. If you do that a couple of times you will find situations like that less charged and you will be able to use some of that caustic wit us nancy boys are soooooooo famous for to bring him down to size. I suspect he is unaware of how much it upsets you..straight white guys are mostly oblivious to such stuff. They often need a good smack in the chops (figuratively) before they cop on.

He didn't know he was gay, so he didn't make the joke to deliberately get at him, hence not as his expense. I know this because I read his posts.

Since he is oversensitive he took it to heart and then posted here because he thought there might be a sympathetic ear, but luckily most posters recognise that this was indeed 'everyday life' and not some planned campaign to make a gay guy's life a misery.

Sometimes SI, there isn't any other motive, no conspiracy and nobody trying to get at each other, no matter how hard you look to find it, sometimes it just life, get over it.

If someone considering leaving their job because of perceived homophobic bullying then something is seriously wrong. They would need to be not over sensitive but hyper to take such action and when others dive on a post which has a total of three lines, their powers of deduction are remarkable if not bordering on the psychic. Or perhaps they just don’t want to know?

On the other hand, the poster could just be a waster playing head games of course.

@ Paddy, To tackle it means he would have to come out and that is unlikely so he will just move on. I agree with the point about standing up for himself lets face it, he shouldn’t have to.

I find it very strange that this topic has never been seriously discussed on the boards despite it being something which probably affects more gay people than any other.
