its really still a developing situation as its nightime i think. guy on six one news from auckland was sayin the death toll had been revised down - but while that would be great there are still a lot of people trapped and missing.
@penny - yea she didnt come back in but the latest we heard is that she made contact - but again rte news were saying that there is concern for a number of irish but as you say more serious concern for at least 5. really hope they are all ok.

Just got a text from my friend, she's in Wellington (not Wellingtons for anyone thinking that they are looking at the fetish thread), so that's good.

RIP to the NZ earthquake victims in Christchurch. As the Irish tend to converge on Australia and New Zealand, it was highly likely for Irish to be caught up in the disaster.

With the flooding in Oz, the wildfires, the hurricane etc...Oceania has had a run of rotten fortune lately.

Still serious concern for 2 Irish with 9 Irish still not having made contact.

100 of the 300 still missing are thought to be in the one building.

I was in Christchurch last month and there was a lot of damage from the quake in September - buildings collapsed into the streets, rootless houses, whole streets cordoned off due to unstable buildings. Half the cathedral was roped off due to unstable buildings. The news from Christchurch is heartbreaking - such a beautiful city and such friendly people.

Hopes are fading of finding any more survivors following the devastating earthquake in New Zealand after a strong aftershock measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale caused problems in the city and suburbs this morning.

Up to 113 are dead and around 200 others are still missing in Christchurch.

One of the missing is a 40-year-old man from Abbeydorney in Co Kerry.

The Irish man was working as an accountant at the PGG Building when it collapsed and had been living in New Zealand with his wife and son.

Reporter Will Hine from Radio New Zealand said it is unlikely any more survivors will be found.

Dozens of foreign language students died when the Canterbury Television building collapsed.

The City's Mayor, Bob Parker, said many countries are suffering together.

just doing some googling thereo on these continental plates etc that shift causing these major earthquakes like the one in Japan. i notice that there is a mid atlantic ridge (tectonic plate) also - so if there was a very strong earthquake in this region - then its probable that it could cause a large tsunami that would head towards ireland - but there has never been any alert or anything to this possibility - any experts out there on why this atlantic ridge is not seen as a threat. (think watching so much sky news is getting me into drama mode )

It is not a risk because it is "divergent": stuff moves away from it.
In Japan, a plate goes under another one.
