El Hierro in the Canaries is experiencing increasing seismic measurements.

Worse case scenario- It could set off that La Palma rock into the ocean causing that supertsunami thats been promised for the Atlantic.

Hopefully, it just a few grumbles.

100s and 100s dead. Its a major earthquake ie over 7 on Richter.

There are around 15 major quakes every year, but most probably occur in sparsely populated areas, and at sea,(which I guess is sparsely populated).

Looks like many of he dead are in the capital Ankara.

Istanbul is overdue. It's going to be carnage when it gets hit.

Actually, looks like I was wrong about Ankara. It's such a shame though: any other civilised country prone to earthquakes has enforced building standards. Turkey has permitted the most shoddy, dangerous buildings be erected over the last five decades. Instanbul will be a tragedy when it happens.

Is that why they want to join the EU, to bleed the Natural Disaster fund dry? Its a tragic thing to happen to anyone though!

I am sorry to hear of this latest earthquake in Turkey.

Cheezy is correct - Turkey has deplorable building standards and it is slap bang in the middle of a strike slip fault zone. A study I worked on a few years back on housing in Europe (and including Turkey) found that 50% of dwellings in Turkey were constructed without a local authority building permit. About 20% of dwellings in Turkey lack proper sanitation facilities.

In a word, baksheesh.
Political corruption.
Building permits granted by baksheesh, bribes.
In Ireland it is known as the brown envelope ,
though not as rife as in Turkey and all middle eastern countries.

Are houses more likely to collapse if they don't have a flushable toilet?

@ Ms Merkel- you've NAMA and EU on the brain!
